Cake Maker Spotlight - Heaven is a Cupcake

For Mademoiselle Rachel her first bite of a macaron represented a moment of luxury and as such, we strive to ensure that each of our customers experience a taste of Paris with every bite. We're always excited to see the imaginative and fun ways our macarons are used to decorate cakes and patisserie by talented bakers.
Heaven is a Cupcake is an award-winning cake company based in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
We sat down for a (virtual!) cup of tea with Lucy to chat about all kinds of wonderful baked goods...
Tell us a little about yourself, what's your business, and when did you start?
I started Heaven is a Cupcake back in 2010 in my mum's kitchen! I had just finished my Masters in English Literature and spent a month in the USA where I was immersed in the world of cupcakes. I baked a lot whilst over there and when I came home I carried on baking and practicing my skills. I decided to start up a facebook page and simple website to sell my cupcakes whilst trying to find a job but nothing was quite right. Suddenly the orders started flowing in and it has continued to grow since. I now have my own industrial unit where we have our kitchen and bakers/cake decorators who work for me.
What inspired you to start?
My mum always used to make our birthday cakes and had an album of all the cakes she'd made over the years. We baked a lot together and I'd often be in awe of her designs. That, along with my experience in America, made me want to give it a go myself. I never dreamed I'd have a business out of it!
What's your speciality bake and where do you draw inspiration from?
Our speciality would be our buttercream cakes. There are so many great bakers and cake decorators, you can never fail to find inspiration online. Social media is such a great tool. Customers often send over lots of inspiration pictures and we put our own spin on the designs we create.
Where are you based and how can people order from you/what area do you cover?
We are in St Albans and cover Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.
How do you incorporate our macarons into your creations?
We add macarons to our cakes as decoration and like the customer had for their wedding cake, can add them as a macaron tower with one of our cakes on top.
What’s your favourite flavour and colour of macaron?
I'm a sucker for pastels! I absolutely love the nutty flavours like pistachio and chocolate/peanut butter but you can't go wrong with classic vanilla.
How did you hear about Mademoiselle Macaron?
I was searching for macarons for myself as love them and came across MM online. It's so nice to find somewhere that does a range of flavours and colours that can be delivered to our door.
