New Year Habits: A Gentle Way to Begin With Journalling

Written by Rachel Hanretty

As the year begins to unfold, I often feel the urge to pause.

Not to overhaul everything or chase ambitious resolutions — but to slow down, take stock, and gently decide how I want the months ahead to feel. Over the years, I’ve learned that the years that serve me best aren’t the ones that start with pressure, but the ones that begin with intention. And for me, that intention usually starts with putting pen to paper.

That’s why journalling has become one of my most meaningful habits for the year ahead.

Why Journalling Is One of the Most Powerful New Year Habits

There’s something grounding about writing things down. When thoughts stay in your head, they tend to circle endlessly (hello 3am wondering). When you write them, they soften, settle, and become clearer.

For me, journalling isn’t about productivity or perfection. It’s about creating space to ask simple but important questions:

  • What do I want more of this year?
  • What habits would support that?
  • What do I need to let go of?

These moments of reflection — especially when the year is already underway — often shape how the rest of the year unfolds far more than rigid resolutions ever do.

Turning Habit-Setting Into a Ritual, Not a Chore

When we created A Moment to Pause, I wanted it to feel like more than a journal or a gift set. I wanted it to feel like a ritual — something you’d genuinely look forward to returning to.

For me, that ritual usually includes:

  • a quiet moment carved out of a busy day
  • a cup of tea I actually enjoy
  • a candle lit, even in the daytime
  • and something sweet beside me while I write

Pairing journalling with a box of handcrafted macarons turns habit-setting into a moment of comfort rather than obligation. It makes the act of writing feel indulgent, not instructional — something you want to come back to again and again.

Habits for the Year Ahead Don’t Have to Be Big

One thing I’ve learned (often through trial and error) is that habits stick best when they’re gentle.

Here are my 2026 resolutions for cultivating healthy daily habits:

  • Writing one page in my journal every night
  • Eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables every day
  • Going to bed by 10pm
  • No working in the evening
  • Waking up at 6am to take time to myself before the chaos of the day starts.

These small, repeatable moments are often the ones that make the biggest difference — especially when life feels full. It helps to stick to them when you have this lovely  Healthy Habits Journal

A Thoughtful Gift for a New Chapter

A journalling gift set is a simple but meaningful way to say:
“I hope you take a moment for yourself.”

Whether it’s for someone starting a new chapter, someone who’s had a demanding year, or for yourself, A Moment to Pause is designed as an invitation — to slow down, reflect, and begin again in your own time.

Because the truth is, it’s never too late to build habits that support how you want your life to feel.

As the year continues, I hope you find moments to pause, to write, and to savour the small things — ideally with a macaron beside you. I know I will be.

Bisous,
Rachel x
